Brian Sweebe, co-owner of the Retro Room and a member of the Main Street Downtown Development Authority, will challenge Wayland Mayor Tim Bala in the Nov. 6 election.
Sweebe opened the Retro Room at the corner of North Main and West Superior Street downtown two years ago. He also is listed as owner and founder of SWENA Marketing and owner-editor of the Northern Spin Internet business featuring photos and entertainment
for Northern Michigan.
Bala is seeking his fifth two-year term as mayor and after he was first elected in 2008, he hasn’t been challenged at the polls except in 2012, then by former Police Chief Dan Miller.
Bala, a Wayland High School graduate, is a builder consultant in the community.
The City Council contests in the Nov. 6 general election will be very quiet, with incumbent Tim Rose and newcomers Joe Kramer and Abe Garcia the onlt three candidates for three open seats. Kramer was appointed to his seat to succeed Trcy Bivins, who resigned in June.
