Land for a proposed park just to the north of the Clipper Cafe and to the south of the JC Wheeler Library on 10th Street is not for sale, the Martin Township Board was told Wednesday evening.
The township is looking into the possibility of having a small recreational park with a splash pad on that site, but Treasurer Sue Tiemeyer said thew landowners aren’t interested in selling.
Tiemeyer is a member of a committee that is considering applying for a Department of Natural Resources grant to fund most of the project. The Township Board last month agreed to the grant application with cap for the local match at $200,000, or 25 percent.
“So it’s back to square one,” the treasurer said.
Meanwhile, she said she’s been told the township’s special committee needs to develop a recreational plan in order to apply for a state grant to help fund a recreational project. She also has learned a survey of township residents also is necessary.
Wayland’s splash pad in its City Park served as a model and inspiration for the idea of having a similar scaled-down facility in Martin. The city put its project together several years ago and the reviews have been very positive.
In other business at Wednesday’s meeting, the Township Board:
• Agreed to pay $100 per location for installation of new street lights on five sites by Consumers Energy.
- Approved parking plans for the second annual; Dirty Donut Race in downtown Martin Saturday, June 22.
- Awarded the low bid of $21,475.88 to Plain Dumpsters for picking up and hauling away materials for the annual Trash Day activity Saturday, May 17.
