This year’s Citizens of the Year award was presented during the Main Street Sesquicentennial celebration Saturday downtown to Sandy Scheib (left) and Dorothy DeWeerd. Both are retired widows who continue to serve the community, Sandy with the monthly Food Truck and Dorothy with Christian Neighbors. In days gone by, Sandy was a supervisor at Fifth Third Bank and Dorothy was a longtime member and president of the Wayland Board of Education. (Photo courtesy of Terry Ellis)

I have not had the privilege to know Sandy Scheib, but I have known and worked with Dotty DeWeerd, specifically for five years on the Wayland Board of Education. Dotty is one of the finest women I have ever known. My admiration and respect for her run deep and wide, and I congratulate the community for their acknowledgment of her talents and contributions to this community! A recognition well deserved, Dotty. Congratulations!

Sandy has been my neighbor for 33 years. Couldn't find a better person than her. I love her dearly. No better choice than her, and Dorothy, Hughy would be proud.
