Barbara J (Owen) Schmidt, age 80, of Dorr, died Sunday, Nov. 22.

Barbara was born in Grand Rapids on Nov. 5, 1940. Barbara was a rural mail carrier out of the Wayland Post Office for 29 years. She was loved by many. She enjoyed reading books. She was a member of the Epiphany Lutheran Church.

She was a longtime member of the Kent County Rural Letter Carriers Association, and she loved to travel.

She will be dearly is survived by her children Kim (Schmidt) and Michael Door, Doug and Patti Schmidt, and many more, including the children that were adopted later: Jennifer Schmidt, Rosemary Schmidt, Danielle (Schmidt) and Kevin Keuning; grandchildren include Tim Door, Kaitlyn (Door) and Ben Wayward, Matthew and Brooke Smith, Michael Schmidt, Mitchell Schmidt, Megan Schmidt, and Ryan Snyder; sisters Linda (Bill Otterson), Helen (Anthony Martinez); brothers Dan (Dawn) Long, and John (Jeanette) Long; sisters-in-law Shirley Lynema and Marianne Owen; foster children Phyllis and Richard Crater; cousin and close friend, Shirley Jones; many cousins, nieces, and nephews; nurse, Heather Jenkins; and Myasthenia Gravis support group friend, Charlie Tyner.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Harold Schmidt in 1994; brother, Bud Owen; sister, Peggy Massengill; father, Melton Owen; and mother, Beryl Hamacher Long.

Barbara will be laid to rest next to Harold in the Dorr Cemetery. A celebration will be held at a later date.
