Wilstand Osmand Newell, age 97 of Ocala, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 11.

He was born Sept. 7, 1926, in Saint Catherine, Jamaica, to Elizabeth Wallace and Humphrey Newell. He came to America on a work visa, became a U.S. citizen, and married Eunice Newell.

Wilstand retired as a dietician/cook from Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y.

He was a loving, generous, and strong opinionated man who embraced his nieces and nephews as the children he never had. He enjoyed traveling, family gatherings, cookout, and debating politics. He was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church men’s club.

Wilstand is preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Newell; mother, Elizabeth Wallace; father, Humphrey Newell; sisters Loretta Green, Isis Frazer; brothers D’Cuvley Newell, Solomon Newell. He is also survived by lots of nieces, nephews, extended family.

A celebration of Wilstand’s life will be hosted by Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Ocala, Fla., at a date and time to be determined. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, 5740 S. Pine Ave., Ocala.
