Martin native Jean Bernice Voorhees, 87, of Traverse City, died Monday Aug. 16, at Munson Medical Center.

Jean was born on Sept. 24, 1933, to the late Henry and Grace (Tuinstra) Boss in Martin. After high school, she was employed at Keebler in Grand Rapids.

On March 25, 1955, she married the late Bert Voorhees, noted by both family and friends as “being that couple who never moved beyond being love birds.”

Jean spent her working years as a teller at banks. Beginning with Old Kent in the Grand Rapids area, Empire National Bank after she and Bert moved to Traverse City and then eventually NBD. Jean was a long-time member of Faith Reformed Church.

She loved bowling, traveling with her husband on adventures in the RV and journaled many experiences. She loved to be hospitable and never turned a friend away for a meal, she kept a tidy house and her green thumb provided bountiful flower and vegetable gardens for all to enjoy.

Jean is survived by her children; Patti (Vinnie) Orsini of Baltimore, Md., Brian Voorhees of Lake Ann, Boyd Voorhees of Traverse City and Katie (Chuck) Fouchey of Interlochen. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren (with two baby boys on the way) and siblings Dale (Gloria) Boss, Ethel Vander Weide and Lois Wuis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings Jay Boss and Shirley Hovinga.

Visitation will take place Saturday Aug. 21, from 2 to  3 p.m. at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home. A funeral will take place at 3 p.m., also at the funeral home.
