Service Tuesday for Native American Vernita Weesaw

Vernita Weesaw died Wednesday, March 4. She was 82.

Vernita was proud of her heritage and was a proud member of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians. She was raised and lived on Bradley Indian Settlement for many years.

She was an avid gardener and was a true animal lover. She loved to travel and found found pleasure in visiting with family and friends.

She is survived by her son, Paul Shue; granddaughter, Ashlee Weesaw; sister-in-law, Lorraine “Shubshekwe” Gideon; aunt, Celia Osawabine; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Weesaw; son, Bernard Weesaw Jr.; parents Wanetia and Ben Jackson; brother, Gerald; sisters Mary Lou and Marilyn.

Her funerals will be held at noon Tuesday, March 10, at Luella Collins Community Center, 419 126th Ave., Shelbyville, with visitation from 11 a.m. to noon. prior to the service. She will be laid to rest at Bradley Indian Mission Cemetery.
