Service was today for former Project Hope administrator

Maria G. Medina, age 78, of Hamilton died Thursday, Jan. 15.

Maria was born to Candelario and Manuela (Serrata) Rios on March 29, 1947, in La Villa, TX. She was a member of St. Mary’s Visitation Catholic Parish in New Salem. Maria was an administrator for the Project Hope Food Bank for many years and a teacher’s aide at Sycamore Elementary School in Dorr.

In her younger years Maria always had her grandchildren playing at her house. She loved children and had a huge heart and was passionate in her care for the young, needy, and the elderly, even taking in her six nieces/nephews when her sister was battling illness and caring for her mother at the end of her life.

Maria enjoyed cooking, traveling to visit family and friends and playing the slots.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Luis Medina, a granddaughter Valerie Mireles, eight brothers and sisters, daughter-in-law Sheri Medina, her sister’s husband Genaro Martinez, and five other brothers and sisters-in-law.

Maria is survived by her husband, Lauro, and children: Lauro Jr. Medina, Patricia (Hector) Mireles, Samuel Medina, and Sylvia (Don) Grover; grandchildren: Victoria (Victor) Perez, Vanessa Mireles, Veronica Mireles, Vianca Mireles, and Samantha Medina; 15 great grandchildren; sister: Zulema Martinez; four sisters and a brother-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral was scheduled for today, Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026, at Dykstra Funeral Homes – Mulder Chapel, in Holland. Pastor Rey Garza will be officiating. Burial was in Bentheim Cemetery.
