Martin naphoto_20160418_WM0065562_0_20160418tive Gordon Brewer, 92, of Holland, died Sunday, April 17.
Gordon was born May 22, 1923, in Kalamazoo, to Robert and Helen (Gordon) Brewer. He grew up in Martin and graduated from Martin High School in 1941. Gordon attended Hope College for two years and then served three years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Gordon re-enrolled at Hope College, where he and his wife, Lorraine Bult, were married in 1948, later to become educators. Lorraine taught elementary school and Gordon taught high school. For eight years Gordon taught high school in Byron Center and Kelloggsville. In 1956, with a growing family, they moved to Holland, Michigan, where Gordon started to teach physical education, coach track, and eventually became athletic director at Hope College.
Lorraine and Gordon became longtime members of Third Reformed Church. Gordon retired in 1988 from Hope College after 32 years of service.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of 67 years, Lorraine, on June 20, 2015, his sister Margery Van Reenan, and brother Paul Frederick Brewer.
He is survived by children: Robert James Brewer of Prospect Heights, IL, Lawrence Gordon Brewer of Cincinnati, Daniel Richard Brewer (Donna) of Philadelphia, Susan Harrier (Thomas) of Zeeland; grandchildren: Kelsea Brewer, Jesse Lee Hayes, Joseph Monteith Hayes.
A service to honor the faith and life of Gordon Brewer will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22, at Third Reformed Church, E. 13th Street, Holland, 49423. A time of visitation will be 5 to 8 pm, Thursday, April 21, at the Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th Street, Holland. Interment will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
