
Richard James “Justin” Beukema, age 83, died Tuesday, Oct. 21.
Rich enjoyed sailing, farming, gardening, and spending time with his family. He loved the many cats he had over the years, and, most recently, his three, Ferby, Sylvester, and Grayson.
He served his community in township government and more than 30 years as a police officer for the Grand Rapids Police Department. Rich and Maxine were married in 1961 and together shared 64 years together.
As a nod to Rich’s legacy, family and friends are invited to wear their best flannel shirts to his services.
He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Maxine Beukema; children Darl Beukema, Melinda (Mark) Green, S. James (Christa) Beukema, Brendolyn (Matthew) VanZomeren; grandchildren Joel (Jay) Green, Ethan Green, Levi (Amber) Green, Esther (Kyle) Fleet, Lucas (Allie) Thorp, Adrian (Kaiden) Thorp, Darl (Hannah) Beukema, Naomi (Stephen) Cook, Devin Beukema, Sophi Beukema, Jonah Beukema, Lydia Beukema, Marin Beukema; 12 great-grandchildren; siblings John (Caroline) Beukema, Clare Deurloo; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Rich was preceded in death by his parents Marenus and Anne Beukema; brother, Jim Beukema; sister-in-law, Denice Beukema; nephew, Timothy Beukema; and brothers-in-law Bill Deurloo and Henry Bulliss.
Services will be held at noon. Friday, Oct. 24, at Holy Cross Antiochian Orthodox Church, 2828 Richmond St. NW, Grand Rapids, with visitation one hour prior. Rich will be laid to rest at Robbins Cemetery in Yankee Springs Township.
