
Nancy Harig, a member of the Wayland High School Class of 1955, died March 3, in Grand Rapids after a lengthy illness at the age of 88.
She was born on Nov. 3, 1937, to Frank and Mary Stankey. She was raised on the family farm with brothers Bill, Dick,Ron and Frank.
After her children were in school she joined her husband at Steelcase.
Nancy was an accomplished crafter, sewer, cook and baker. She and Ernie raised their six children in northeast Grand Rapids and instilled a strong work ethic by example. She always made enough food to feed neighbor kids who happen to walk in at meal time.
Nancy’s family was the center of her universe.
She enjoyed bowling and was a devoted Detroit Tigers fan. She is survived by her children; Mary (Steve) Ryan, Vickie (Russ) Morren, Tom (Penny-deceased) Harig, June VanDyken (Joe Scheid- deceased), Ken (Amy) Harig, Paul (Connie) Harig, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, brothers Bill (Lis) Stankey, Ron (OkJung) Stankey, sister in law Linda Stankey and several nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her husband Ernie; by her parents Frank and Mary Stankey, brothers Dick Stankey, Frank Stankey, sister in law Marilyn Stankey. great granddaughter Kendra Kozal. She was also preceded by Ernie’s brother Marvin (Anna), sisters Anna (Norm) Nichols, and Teresa (Jim) VanWagner.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday May 3, at the West Walker Sportsman Club; 0599 Leonard St NW, Talmadge Township.
