Services for tribal elder Gordy Sprague set for Monday

Gordon Allen Sprague (Gordy) walked on Tuesday, April 7. He was 75.

Gordy was born Aug.1, 1950, to Allen (Fred) and Leona Sprague. He graduated from Wayland High School in 1968 and went straight into the workforce. He worked from the age of 18, until retirement at Pet Milk, which is now Treehouse Foods.

Gordy also spent many years coaching and umpiring baseball and softball. He was a race car enthusiast and could be found most weekends at Kalamazoo or Berlin Speedway. Gordy was a proud tribal elder of the Gun Lake Tribe.

Gordy is survived by his brothers Clarence, Dale, and Phil Sprague; sister-in-law, Colleen Sprague; nephews Billy Weber, Paul Sprague, Andrew (Lindy) Sprague, and DJ (Shannon) Sprague; nieces Becky (Don) Baker, Marcia Sprague, and Victoria Sprague; as well as several great-nieces and -nephews.

Gordy was preceded in death by his parents Allen and Leona; sisters Patty and Judy Sprague, Sharon Near, and Laurie Brand; as well as his niece, Rose Hinmon.

Visitation with friends and relatives will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 12, 2026 at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home (Wayland Chapel), 312 North Main St. His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 13, with visitation one hour prior, at Luella Collins Community Center, 419 126th Ave., Shelbyville. A luncheon will follow the service. Interment will be at Bradley Indian Mission Cemetery.
