Services Sept. 26 for former Gun Lake marine mechanic

Charles Edward Garrett, age 94, of Kentwood, died Saturday, Sept. 21.

Charles served his country in the U.S. Navy. He later worked as a marine mechanic at Skelton’s Marina at Gun Lake. He later shared his knowledge of boat engines with students while teaching at the Kent County Skills Center.

Charles loved to fish, travel and fly his replica World War I biplane.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, June; children, Dennis and (Chris Nielsen) Garrett, Craig and Kim Garrett; grandchildren, Matthew (Kim) Garrett, Jennifer (Bill) Overbeck, Stephen (Marisol Olvera) Garrett, Michael Garrett, Allison (Walter) Cueva, Lindsey Garrett; great grandchildren, Brycen Garrett, Aubrie Garrett, William Overbeck, Jacob Overbeck, Sofia Cueva, Ava Cueva; and many extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ron and Helen; sister, Loretta; and daughter-in-law, Kathy.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.Thursday, Sept. 26, at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 1253 52nd St SE, Kentwood, with Rev. Peter Vu presiding. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may meet the family one hour prior to service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions to St. Mary Magdalen Church.
