Daniel Calkins, age 72, of Wayland, died Saturday, Jan. 20.

Dan loved spending time with friends, golfing, camping and racing, but most important, spending time with family.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara Calkins; children Kristy Calkins, Keith (Kelli) Calkins; grandchildren Emily, Samantha, and Isabella Johnson, Bryce, Brayden and Bryleigh Calkins; siblings Barbara Jeffers, Teresa (Tim) Permoda, Shirley (Jim) Graham, and Christine (Doug) Morris; in-laws Lee (Kathy) Pankratz, Paula (Gary) Fales, and Amy (Dave) DeShaw; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dan was born to the late Max and Margie (Vollink) Calkins.

Besides his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Calkins; and in-laws Felix and Katherine Pankratz.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Woodward Baptist Church, 2160 76th St SW, Byron Center, with visitation from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faith Hospice or Woodward Baptist Church.

Dan sat behind me in the trumpet section in band. I was a freshman in the french horn section, and nervous about being in high school. He was kind and funny, cracking jokes all the time - and helped me to relax with it all. I always remembered that. My deepest sympathies for Barb and the family.
