Seven Generations Park ceremony set for Saturday, Nov. 8

Virginia Sprague-Vanderband of the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians and Watson Township Supervisor Kevin Travis cut the ribbon for the park in October 2022.

Watson Township is planning a celebration of improvements to Seven Generations Park near the corner of M-222 and 20th Street at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8.

The public park made possible through a Michigan DNR Passport Grant of $150,000 awarded in 2023. “This generous gift jump started improvements to Seven Generations Park,” said Watson Township Supervisor Kevin Travis. We are also inviting local public officials and the press to attend our event.”

Travis added that anyone who would like to speak about the project is welcome.

Charamy Cleary, grant coordinator for the DNR, will discuss the program, and how it can transform the community.

Special recognition will be given to the Gun Lake Tribe for assistance with Bodéwadmimwen for park signage, students at Michigan Career and Technical Institute for creating the park sign, the Allegan County Community Foundation for the first grant to put in the first trail, and the many volunteers that made this project possible.

The Seven Generations name was inspired by the Gun Lake Tribe of Potawatomis with the notion the facility will serve seven generations of local youths in the future.

Travis added, “We also want to recognize the Consumers Energy Foundation, and Cole Concrete for the next phase of our park, for the construction of a veterans’ memorial. Consumers Energy Foundation provided a $15,000 grant for construction of a the memorial with the Put Your Town on the Map Grant.

Cole Concrete and Consumers Concrete is donating time, labor and materials toward the project.

“We’ve also received a generous, and anonymous, donation of $5,000 from a local resident for the memorial.

Refreshments and snacks will be provided.
