Despite the misunderstandings about garden shops closing in Michigan, the smaller “mom and pop” style businesses are permitted to open.

The state order for closure applies only to big box stores such as Menard’s, Home Depot and Lowe’s, three businesses local icon Jay L. Smith of Smith Lumber & Coal identified as the reason he had to shut down after more than 100 years serving Wayland.

The Red Wagon, located at the former site of Peereboom’s just north of Wayland on Division Avenue, posted on Facebook today: “Starting Monday, April 13, we will be open for curbside sales on seed potatoes, onion sets, asparagus and other cool weather veggies.

“If you can please call ahead @ (269) 397-1410, we can have your product ready for pickup when you arrive. Our hours are going to be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Saturday and appointments only available after 3 p.m.
