The big showdown between the Wayland and South Christian girls’ basketball teams Tuesday night turned out to be a big dud for Wayland.
South Christian, ranked No. 1 in at least one state Division 2 poll, gave folks a glimpse of why in a surprising 49-27 verdict.
Both teams entered the contest with 7-0 overall records. So the Wildcats now are 7-1.
The Sailors came through on defense, limiting senior inside player Addie Sikorski to just six points. Junior guard Marissa Ainsworth led Wayland with eight points. Senior Laney Wolf chipped in a three-point field goal.
Wayland will try to get back on track Friday evening at home to welcome Middleville Thornapple Kellogg. It will be Snowcoming.
