Michigan Boundary Commission plans hearing on annexation proposal

A public hearing on the proposed annexation of 28 parcels of land into the City of Wayland will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the gym inside Hopkins Elementary School, 400 Clark St.

The proposed annexation of lands from the Township of Hopkins and the Township of Wayland to the City of Wayland was filed by petition with the State Boundary Commission. The properties, located along 12th Street just west of the U.S.-131 expressway, include 12th Street, 135th Avenue and 130th Avenue in the two townships.

The City of Wayland has not taken a position on the annexation proposals, but many of the parcels are included in a Downtown Development District established by action of the Hopkins Township Board. The township and Village of Hopkins have worked out a 425 agreement to try to provide sewer services to the parcels in Hopkins Township.

The public hearing is being held to receive comments from the public and interested parties on the proposed annexation and gather information about the review criteria outlined in the State Boundary Commission Act. Oral or written comments may be presented in person at the hearing on Nov. 10, or submitted in writing by mail, email, or facsimile by close of the hearing.
