Steven Johnson has announced he will seek his third two-year term in the Michigan Legislature’s 72nd District in the August Republican primary election.
Johnson, who lives in Wayland, was first elected in 2016 and was re-elected in 2018. He will not be eligible to serve for more than six years under current state term limits laws.
Johnson in 2016 won the GOP primary in a five-way battle with 29.3 percent of the vote. He then won the general election over Democrat Steve Shoemaker with 59% of the total vote.
He showed surprising strength in the August 2018 primary with 74% of the vote over one challenger and went on to win his second two-year term by defeating Democrat Ron Draayer.
He now faces Democratic opponents in community activist Lily Cheng-Schulting of Kentwood and Cade Wilson of Kentwood in the general election. There has been no word yet as to whether he will face a Republican challenger in the primary.
The 72nd District includes the City of Wayland and Dorr, Leighton and Wayland townships in Allegan County and Gaines Township and the City of Kentwood in Kent County.
The Township’s and Cities described in the last paragraph of the article indicated they compromise the 73rd District. They actually make up the 72nd State House District.
Also, unless he’s elected NOT to seek office after all, Democrat Cade Wilson will appear on the Primary ballot in 2020.
