Funtastic1Wayland Union Schools will start its second Summer Fun Days celebration series Monday, June 13, ending the weekday program Aug. 27, featuring free lunches for area kids under 18 years of age.

The program was such a big success that it returns this summer and even has just about doubled its corporate sponsors. In most of the sessions, children are provided free nutritious lunches from the school’s food service department and sometimes it’s accompanied by special entertainment.

Most of the meals will be provided weekdays at the United Church of Wayland, Steeby Elementary, Windsor Woods Community Center and Sawmill Estates on Reno Drive. But sometimes they will be offered in such places as the City Park and Henika Library when there are special programs planned.

The first special program will be in the newly renovated park from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, June 20, with a “Bounce Party.” Featured will be Mega Bouncer, Wacky Comb, and tee-ball inflatables. A special addition will be a frozen yogurt sundae truck event, sponsored by Northern Physical Therapy and the Wayland Union Education Foundation.

Other special events this summer will be:

• PLAYTIME IN THE PARK at Wayland City Park,  June 14, July 12, Aug. 9, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Partnering with Early Head Start and Great Start to offer Playtime in the Park for children age birth to
five and their siblings, there will be fun summer activities such as bubbles, sidewalk chalk, hula hoops,
parachute play and a free book for each family. Free Lunch at noon

• FLYING ACES — Monday, June 27, at 10:30am at Steeby Elementary. Lunch 11:30 to noon. Watch an exciting performance by the Pro Flying Disc Team, which will perform exciting tricks with Frisbees. The enterainment is for kids of all ages, from preschool age children to teens and even adults. The shows end with an audience participation contest. Sponsored by Pro Mow Lawn Care.

• COMEDY AND MAGIC SHOW — Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 10:45 a.m. at Steeby Elementary. Lunch from 11:30 to noon. Performing will be Scheer Genius Assembly Shows. From television appearances in Toronto to stages in Las Vegas, Doug Scheer has honed these hysterical routines in more than 9,000 performances across North America. Forty minutes of wacky jokes, off-the-wall games, insane contests – and even a few magical surprises. Sponsored by Tower Pinkster.

• BMX STUNT SHOW — Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 10:30a.m. at Steeby. Lunch 11:30 to noon. Dialed Action Sports Team will perform thrilling bicycle stunts and present a bike safety and anti-bullying message. Spectrum Health will offer low cost bike helmets for an $8 purchase. Sponsored by Triangle & Associates.

 

• KIWANIS KIDS’ DAY — Saturday, Aug. 27, 10 a.m to 1 p.m., Wayland City Park. Lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Games, crafts, music, food and fun! Kids get a free T-shirt. Theme is “Kids Can Be President.”

Henika Public Library will have presentations Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.:

• FRESH FOOD FAIRY — Tuesday, June 14, at Steeby Elementary School. Who knew fresh food could be fun? Enjoy a bike blender smoothie! Lunch 11:30 to noon.

CANDY SCIENCE — Tuesday, June 21, at Steeby. Henika Library is bringing a chance to explore and do candy experiments with AAESA’s Jeanette Kievet. Lunch 11:30 to noon.

• ART ATTACK — Tuesday, June 28, at Henika Library. Drop-in make it, take it crafts at the library. Lunch served at Steeby 11:30 to noon.

• WILDLIFE SAFARI — Tuesday, July 12 at Steeby Elementary. Hands-on experience with animals from around the world.  Lunch 11:30 to noon.

• AUDACIOUS HOOPS — Tuesday, July 19, at Steeby. Enjoy a short hoop performance and take part in fun hoop moves. Lunch 11:30 to noon

Sawmill Estates will serve lunches from 12:30 to 12:45 p.m. Mondays through Fridays Windsor Woods will have lunches from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. United Church of Wayland lunch dates will vary, depending on when next door Steeby lunches are not provided.

Sponsors this summer are Chartwells, Clark Hill, Ed Koehn Ford, GRBS, House Chiropractic, Northern Physical Therapy, Pro Mow, Reno Agency, Tower Pinkster, Triangle Construction, United Bank, Wayland Chamber of Commerce, Wayland Do It Best Hardware and the Wayland Union Education Foundation, who have combined to contribute $7,000 to make the series possible.

Partners for free summer lunches are Sawmill Estates, Windsor Woods, United Church of Wayland, Wayland Kiwanis and the Wayiand City Park.
