Then & Now President Donna Jean Smith passes at age 79

Donna Jean Smith, age 79 of Wayland, died Thursday, June 2. She was president of the Then & Now Historical Society based in Dorr.

Donna was a founding member of the Wayland Tree Tracers before becoming president of the ‘Then and Now’ Genealogical Society. She retired from government service, having been a rural letter carrier for 22 years.

After retirement, Donna enjoyed traveling, writing family histories, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving family includes her daughters Marlene (Rick) Kane, Melanie (Todd) Keller, Melissa Smith, Mary (Tery) Gamelin; and seven grandchildren Brittany, Coty, Jessica, Briana, Abigail, Caitlyn, and Jarod. She is also survived by her sister, Diane (Dean) Wolf; brother-in-law, Donald (Nancy) Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Harris Smith, and her brother, Peter (Marge) Miller. 

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, at Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th St., Byron Center. A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 9408 Wilson Ave. SW, Byron Center, MI 49315, with Msgr. William Duncan celebrant.
