Three local grid teams to open season Thursday

The 2025 high school football season will get under way in earnest at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, and all three local teams will be in action.

Wayland will have another engagement with Lansing Waverly, a non-league opponent it defeated a year ago, 49-14.The Wildcats finished their 2024 campaign with an overall record of 4-5. The Warriors, who haven’t had a winning season since 2012 and were 2-7 last year.

Hopkins also will have a non conference return engagement with Fremont, which it defeated  34-20 in last year’s season opener. The Vikings completed their season finished at 6-4. The home-standing Packers haven’t had a winning season since 2013 and they were 2-7 last year.

Martin’s opener will be on the home field against Bridgman. The Clippers prevailed 42-36 a year ago, but the Bees came up with a 35-34 squeaker two seasons ago. Martin finished at 7-2 and Bridgman was 5-5 last season.

    Too bad Hopkins and Wayland can’t open. Filling the stand with local teams probably makes too much sense.
