Thornapple Kellogg High School athlete Trent Robert Johnson, age 18, took his own life Saturday, July 4. He was a good friend to many Wayland area residents.

Born Sep. 25, 2001, in Grand Rapids, the son of Timothy Johnson and Teresa Wilson, he was a lifelong resident of Middleville and was a 2019 graduate of Thornapple Kellogg High School, where he excelled in football and wrestling. He scored several touchdowns against the Wildcats. He also played rugby for Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School.

In his free time Trent enjoyed the outdoors, golfing, hunting, fishing, water skiing, snow skiing, and riding dirt bikes. He especially enjoyed “making memories” with family and friends. Trent was a strong willed and dedicated leader, and hard worker with a strong work ethic. He will be remembered for his big heart and million-dollar smile.

Trent is survived by his parents: Tim Johnson and Teresa Wilson; sister, Kali Johnson; grandparents: Marcia Friedrich, Duane Friedrich, the entire Friedrich family, and Kathy Wilson; adopted grandparents: Carol Kelly and Pat Kelley; aunt: Lisa Zender; uncles: Randy Johnson and Eben Briggs; and his beloved dog: Kash Johnson.

He will be missed by countless aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, Thornapple Kellogg community of friends, coaches, teachers, and neighbors.

Trent was preceded in death by his brother: Timothy Brent Johnson Jr.; and grandfather: Harry “Jiggs” Johnson.

Trent’s family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at the Beeler-Gores Funeral Home, Middleville. Trent’s memorial service will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at Journey Church, Middleville, with Pastor Derek Schultz, officiating.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the safety of community, Trent’s memorial service will take place outdoors.

What a sad notice - my condolences to the family. 18 years old should be a great time of life. I don't understand the taking of life by one's own devices, especially one so young.
