
The Hopkins girls and the Wayland boys took first places Saturday at the Hopkins Invitational track meet. Hopkins boys and Wayland girls, meanwhile, both took second.
The Wildcat lads accumulated 210 points atop the eight-team field and the Vikings had 145. Hopkins girls had 160 points and Wayland 147.
Viking junior Kellen Ford edged Wayland challengers Landon Dunahoo and Chance Lenhart in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.19 seconds. Ford was second and Wayland’s Jake Reeder third in the 200.
Wildcat Brock Wheeler came in ahead of Viking Jacob Helder and Wildcat Maurgan Howard in the open 400 in 52.74 seconds.
Junior Jack Estelle took first for Hopkins in the 1600-meter run with a clocking of 4:29.09.
Clayton Kerber crossed the line first in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.71 seconds. He also won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 42.78, edging Wayland’s Alex Hubbard.
Wayland’s 400-meter relay squad of Jake Reeder, Chance Lenhart, Jacob Crater and Carter Dunahoo barely edged the Hopkins foursome with a time of 45.2 seconds. The results in the 800-meter relay were very similar, as Reeder Maurgan Howard, Wheeler and Dunahoo won by a little more than a second at 1:33.43. Dylan Pallet, Xander Stepek, Zachary Keena and Breslin Vandenbos hooked up to win the 3200-meter relay in 8:27.51.
Wayland’s Ashton Kuhlman threw the shot a personal best distance of 48.65, Joshua Maule of Hopkins was second and Lucas VanPopering third. Kuhlman then proceeded to out throw everybody else in the discus at 152.35.
Carter Marquard won the high jump for the second straight year at 6-2, matching his invitational record. Gavin Howard and Carter Williamson made it a 1-2-3 Wildcat sweep.

Freshman Luke Klinge cleared 12-6 again in the pole vault. Teammate Graycin Ingle was runner-up and Wildcat Jackson Byers third.
Carter Marquard edged Hopkins sophomore Parker Warners in the long jump with a leap of 19-1.
The girls’ competition also was close between the two neighborhood schools.
Viking junior standout Riley Homrich edged Wayland’s Megan Brogger in the 100-meter dash. But Brogger came back to capture the 200 dash in 26.86 seconds and she won the 400, threatening to break the 60-second barrier at 1:00.84.
Bre Hoogewind, only a Wildcat freshman, won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:38.35.
Viking standout hurdler Kambria Moored did her thing again, winning 100-meter high hurdles in 15.92 seconds, setting a new meet record in that event. She broke her own meet record set last year in the 300-meter hurdles in 46.82 seconds.
The Lady Vikings showed off their sprinting abilities in winning the 400-meter relay in 50.85 seconds, featuring Annika Ford, Moored, Ellarie Baugh and Homrich.
Another meet record fell in the 800-meter relay with Moored, Ava VanderVeen, Navaya Ingle and Homrich, whose time was 1:49.64.
The Wildcats regained their chops in the 1600-meter relay, winning it with Ryleigh Haveman, Hoogewind, Ayva Mulder and Brogger in 4:24.96.
Hopkins’ Keilah Bonga took first in the shot put at 30-9.5. She broke the meet record in the discus with a winning toss of 124-5.
Perennial pole vault star Evie Mathis of Wayland had just another day at the office at 11-6.
The Vikings’ Ellarie Baugh slipped in ahead off Mathis to win the long jump at 16-0.
