Two Wayland Council members are resigning

Grace Sefranik

When the next City of Wayland election comes up this coming November, the names of two current council members will not appear on the ballot.

Jerry Jansen III

Grace Sefranik and Jerry Jansen III Monday night announced they will step down from their seats, Jansen this summer and Sefranik in the Nov. 4 election. Jansen told colleagues he is moving to a difference residence and Sefranik said, “I’m not a quitter and this feels like quitting,” adding that she has enjoyed her nearly two years serving on the council.

Sefranik explained that she has just become aware of a medical issue in her family, which will require her attention.

City Manager Erik Wilson said Jansen’s successor will be appointed later this summer. The person elected will be able to seek the remaining year on his or her two-year term. Sefranik’s successor will be elected Nov. 4.

In other business at Monday evening’s meeting, the council:

• Looked on as Wilson successfully negotiated a settlement for $1,389 with citizen Peter Blok in connection with an incident involving the Wayland Fire Department in 2022 at the Ed Koehn Ford dealership.

  • Heard Mayor Pro Tem Joe Kramer ask local citizens to be sure to place their refuse materials at the curb in the annual city-wide trash pickup.
  • Heard an announcement from Mayor Jennifer Antel that the Wayland Roadrunners program will open for its 29th season under the guidance of her husband, Raymond Antel. She predicted next year will be his last heading up the program.
