Valentine’s Day Cake is a fun surprise for the kids

by Kathy Hamman Miller

Just for fun! Get the kids together and tell them you’re going to make a surprise cake and need their help. Wait until they see what shape they will be able to decorate when you’re finished! Have lots of sprinkles and frosting to bring out at the end to top off with their artistic ideas! Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Here’s what you’ll need:

1 boxed cake mix and the ingredients to make it, I used a strawberry flavor.

Frosting, either 2 tubs of store brought frostings, or I made creamed cheese with the recipe that follows.

Large and small candy hearts of choice

Sugar sprinkles of choice

Large 15 “ platter, a large pizza pan works too.

1 round cake pan 9”

1 square cake pan 8”

Make the cake mix up and place in greased cake pans. Bake and let cook for 15 minutes. Cut the circle in half and flip the square on your large platter turning to make a diamond shape. Place each half on the top of your diamond to make a heart. I warm up the frosting just a tad to spread on, will make it easier for the kids too.

For the choice of home made frosting:

5 cups of confectioner sugar

4 ounces cream cheese

1 stick butter

1 tablespoon pure vanilla

5 tablespoons milk or water

In a mixing bowl measure out the confectioner sugar making a well in the center. Add the vanilla and milk/water to the well. Warm your cream cheese and butter just to soften and place in the well stirring to combine until smooth. Frost immediately while the frosting is still warm. Decorating right after. Enjoy!
