Veyda Conley still breaking 20, but is 2nd fiddle

Martin junior cross-country ace Veyda Conley broke the 20-minute barrier again, but still had to settle for second place behind Gobles star Libby Smith at the latest Southwestern Athletic Conference race Wednesday at Parchment.

Conley this time turned in one of her finest 5K times ever, at 19:38.82, but Smith ran a blistering 18:56.39.

Meanwhile, the Clipper ladies finished fourth among 15 teams in the competition with 97 points. Saugatuck, Gobles and Kalamazoo Hackett all came in ahead of Martin’s more than respectable score.

Rounding out the Martin girls’ scoring were Sara Schipper in 15th place,Allison Rodgers 19th, Riley Bender 28th and DuRae Sage 35th.

The Martin boys’ squad settled for ninth place in its race. The Clipper guys scored 250 points. Saugatuck again was the winner of that contest.

Jadon Dettman led the Clippers by finishing 25th in 19:04.30. He was followed by Hunter Hayes in 19:53.45 for 40th place, Gari Salvador-Garcia in 43rd at 19:57.38, Logan TenBrink in 97th and Xander Ruiter in 102nd.
