Victims of Gun Lake fire, explosion are seeking help

A GoFundMe page has been established for a family that lost their Gun Lake area home to fire Friday morning (www.gofundme.com).

The explosion and fire destroyed the house, routing six people inside. Wayland and Yankee Springs firefighters arrived at the scene and reported the house, located on Sunrise Lane west of Patterson Road, was a total loss. All six were able to escape without serious injuries.

Allegan County 911 dispatch indicated the call came in about 3 a.m. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

Sondra Mellema, organizer of effort, posted, “We would like to thank the community for all their prayers and willingness to donate after this devastating fire.

“This home was our family home for 19 years. The home was occupied by my parents, two brothers, son and nephew. They have lost everything, including their two vehicles. The fire started in the garage, so we believe one of the cars started fire after our dad returned home late from work.”

Family members stayed with a family member last night and will be temporarily placed in a hotel until a rental home is located.

“We are asking for only new or gently used clothing and everyday necessities at this time,” she continued. “We do not have storage for anything else right now.”
