Vietnam veterans’ advocate Rex Greenawalt dies at 78

Rex Greenawalt, a 1966 graduate of Wayland High School who was very active in the Vietnam veterans’ advocacy movement, died Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Born on Oct. 7, 1947, in Plainwell, he was the son of Fred and Effie Greenawalt, owners and operators of the Wayland Cleaners business.

He was predeceased by: his parents, Vernon Greenawalt and Effie Greenawalt (Carmean); his great grandchild Noah; and his brother Wade Greenawalt. He is survived by: his wife Gloria Haight; his children, Jason Greenawalt (Karen), Anita Ross (Timothy) and Donna Burns (Daniel); and his siblings, Lee Greenawalt and Roxie Muczynski. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, and the funeral will be held at the 2 p.m. at the Northlawn United Methodist Church, 1157 Northlawn St NE, Grand Rapids.

Memorial donations in memory of Rex may be made to the Michigan Veterans Home of Grand Rapids.
