Viking boys tie for 1st in O-K Silver cross opener

The Hopkins boys’ and girls’ teams competed in the first O-K Silver Conference meet of the season Wednesday at Rycenga Park, Fruitport.

The Viking lads tied Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian for first place with 47 team points. Fruitport, Belding and Grandville followed in the five-team contest.

Hopkins’ ace senior JackEstelle was runner-up to Belding’s Jerry Frisbie, crossing the finish line in 17:27.61. Viking teammate Kash Moored, a sophomore, finished fourth in 17:38.53. Sophomore Nicholas Jablonski was 23rd, senior Cole Ver Strate 25th and freshman Logan Kipen 29th.

Junior Lillian Dewey finished seventh for the Vikings in the girls’ race, turning in a 5,000-meter time of 21:58.78.

Senior Allison Breining crossed the finish line in 15th place, freshman Lachlan Merren was an impressive 17th and seniors Grace Schumacher and Shyanna Buskirk were 22nd and 23, respectively.

Hopkins checked in fourth among the five teams with 77 points.  Calvin Christian claimed first place with 37 points.
