WAEMS learns that former director died in Florida

Don Dewitt, the third general manager for Wayland Area Emergency Services (WAEMS) died of cancer Sunday, March 15, in Florida. He was 87.

Dewitt guided the local ambulance service from  Oct. 18,1979, to Oct. 5,1988.

There is no obiturary posted by family, but information was sent to WAEMS personnel this week.

The letter said, “Don lived a life marked by kindness, generosity, and an unwavering love for people. His presence had a way of making others feel seen, welcomed and valued.”

Don is survived by his wife, Jan, siblings, Calvin and Marianne, and his children Mike, Tom, Jeff, Misty, Eddie and Christy. He was a proud grandfather to Cher-Wen, Erin, Chad, Su-Hwei, Morgan, Matthew, and Trevor, all of whom brought him immense joy.

The letter added, “Those who knew Don will remember his open-hearted nature and his ability to connect with anyone he met. He believed deeply in treating others with respect and compassion, and he lived those values every day. His warmth, humor, and steady presence touched countless lives.”

A three-time cancer fighter Don Dewitt understood the importance of excellent health care. As a former hospital administrator and emergency medical services personnel, he knew what to look for when he began his cancer treatment journey more than 20 years ago.

He battled prostate cancer, colon cancer and kidney cancer.
