Watson enforcement officer wants slower traffic limits

Watson Township Enforcement Administrator Jim Davis told the Township Board Thursday evening that he’d like to see speed limits on at least two rural local roads dropped from 55 to 35 miles per hour during the spring season.

Davis said the roads are used by big rigs such as trucks and vehicles hauling heavy equipment, which cause a space problem on arteries that are meant to handle one and a half lanes. He recommended the rules apply to vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds.

Davis said further cleanup work to solve the problem could cost as much as ten to twelve thousand dollars.

Davis also talked about recent ordinance enforcement activities, noting that still are nine open cases, but one troubling case remains because the homeowner who used to be cooperative now is very difficult to make contact with.

In other business Thursday, the Township Board:

  • Set two community cleanup dates as Oct. 3 and May 9 for residents who want to get rid of their trash.
  • Agreed to pay $1,500 per year renewal to continue its support for the JC Wheeler Library in Martin.
  • Voted to continue meeting at 7 p.m. each first Thursday of the month through fiscal year 2026-27.
  • Agreed to pay $545.74 for installation and use of a camera over the ballot box on the west side of Township Hall.
  • Was visited by 57th District Judge Christopher Burnett, who is seeking re-election to his seat later this year. Another seat has as candidates Tom Sifer, Heidi Wolfe and Tim Slais.
  • Was told by County Commissioner Gale Duggan that Allegan County residents have spent more than $166 million on the Michigan Lottery in the past year.
  • Listened to a presentation from representatives of Community Action Allegan, who asked for support for its position of maintaining the 20-year-old Meals on Wheels program. The County Board has decided to change the procedure from providing hot meals and welfare checks on senior citizens to simply dropping off frozen meals that can be heated.
