The Wayland coed equestrian team finished second Saturday in the district level of competition at the Barry County Fairgrounds, thereby earning a berth in the regionals.

They emerged as  Reserve Champions after coming from behind to overcome competition from Delton Kellogg, Thornapple Kellogg and South Christian. They also rallied around teammate Lewis Bush who lost his horse, Dually, the day before the meet. Lewis came out strong riding his mom’s horse.

Team Captain Mikayla Hubert provided encouragement to all with a mid-meet speech that left many in tears. Team members include seniors Hubert, Emma Thompson and Eleanor Bourayne (French exchange student),  juniors Bush, Daphne Bos, Danielle Chapman and Samantha Dreyer, and groom Trevor Hoaglin, sophomore Grace Thomas, and freshman:Jenna Hubert.

The team will travel Friday to Berrien Springs to compete against the other top seven teams from their region for a spot at the state competition.
