Wayland Fire Dept. hails 2 citizens for saving life

The Wayland Fire Department is praising the life saving actions of two secret good samaritans Saturday evening at a house fire in the 2700 block of 6th Street in Wayland Township.

A department spokesperson said the department and mutual aid partners were dispatched to a garage fire with initial reports indicating a fire in the garage with visible smoke where an elderly male was still inside.

“While one passerby called 911 to report the fire, another passerby stopped and escorted the male out of the garage and then proceeded to extinguish the fire with a garden hose,” the spokesperson said. “Fire personnel arrived and verified there was no fire extension to the structure and damage was contained to the area of origin.

“This gentleman left before we were able to get his name and properly thank him for his tremendous actions. On average, a fire will double in size every 30-60 seconds and this garage was within a minute from being well involved. We sincerely appreciate his actions, which prevented significant property damage and may have also saved the life of the homeowner.

We hope this message of gratitude finds the unidentified gentleman and he hears how his actions changed the outcome of this event. He was certainly the right person, in the right place at the right time.

“We would also like to extend our appreciation to our mutual aid partners with the Gun Lake Tribe Public Safety, Martin Fire Department and Hopkins Fire Department who also responded.”
