While Lansing continues to debate on restricting smart phone use in schools, Wayland Union High School has already taken action.

Principal Santino Di Cesare revealed during the Monday school board meeting that the high school has banned students’ cell phones use in school. The goal for the prohibition is to reduce the number of discipline referrals to the office.

Di Cesare said that not only have the referrals dropped, but teachers and students alike have found that students are more focused in class, and more interactive with each other.

The cell phone ban statement came as part of a spotlight school presentation for the high school. The presentation was started with a mini concert of a cello ensemble playing a couple of holiday favorites.  It was concluded with a video montage, put together by teacher Scott Gundersen.

In other highlights from the board meeting:

  • The Curriculum and Technology Committee has decided to stay with trimesters, and to not switch to semesters. No reason was given as to how the decision was made, but it was added that there would be some changes as to how some of the classes are offered.
  • The board approved the use of buses for transporting seniors to the overnight Grad Party 2026.
  • The board also approved the out of state field trip that the high school baseball team will take during spring break. The team will travel to Charleston, S.C., to attend the Ripken Experience.
