Wayland City Police reported a 75-year-old local man took his own life Saturday evening. They indicated he died of an apparent gunshot wound.

Officers were summoned at 9:43 p.m. Saturday to a report of a suicide attempt.

Wayland area EMS and Wayland Fire Department first responders arrived on the scene and began emergency medical care. The victim was then taken to Metro Hospital, but he did not survive his wounds. The victim’s name is being withheld pending the notification of kin. The investigation is continuing.

The Wayland Police Department also was assisted by Michigan State Police.
