A 52-year-old Wayland man died Friday evening of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Resurrection Cemetery in Wyoming.

Authorities said they were summoned to a report of an armed suicidal man at 5:40 p.m. Friday at the cemetery on Clyde Park Avenue SW, north of 44th Street. They said Joel Peloquin brandished a handgun, turned the gun on himself and fired what is believed to be one round. Police also fired shots, but it’s not clear if any struck the man.

Peloquin was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Chuck Morgan, 81, of Wyoming, was a witness. He said he attempted to persuade Peloquin not take take his own life, but things went south quickly after Wyoming police arrived on scene.

Morgan, who was visiting his brother’s gravesite indicated Peloquin seemed distressed and possibly inebriated. Morgan said Peloquin was planning to shoot himself where his grandparents were buried.

The cause of Peloquin’s death is regarded as a suicide by Kent County’s medical examiner, the result of a gunshot to the head.

Why would you run a story like this? Most legimate news agencies, not ones that use their forum to air their own political agendas, do not run stories dealing with suicides out of respect to the family. Simply write the obituary and leave it at that. Be professional.
