Wayland Police Chief Steve Harper to remain with city

Wayland City Police Chief Steve Harper was not selected as Zeeland chief on a 2-1 vote for the other finalist, Tim Jungel of Eaton County.

A special committee of three, including the mayor, city manager and a City Council  member, voted to recommend the appointment of Jungel, Eaton County Sheriff’s office chief deputy, at the City Council’s April 9 meeting.

Six candidates were finalists for the job to succeed retiring Bill Olney. One removed himself and Harper was one of the final two.

Harper was chosen Wayland chief in late 2012, succeeding Dan Miller, who was fired. He also retired as commander of Michigan State State Police, Wayland post.
