In only its second year of competition, the Wayland Union High School FIRST Robotics team is headed to the Michigan State Championship this weekend at Saginaw Valley State University.

The team has competed in two district contests so far this year. During its first competition held March 23-25 at Mason High School, the team made it to the quarterfinal round. In the second, held March 30-April 1 at Kentwood High School, the team made it to the semifinal round.

Since entering the FIRST Robotics Challenge, WHS has made it to quarterfinals or beyond in every competition. The team was also awarded the All-Star Rookie Award during the 2015-2016 season.

The FIRST program is growing at Wayland Union High School. The district has added a FIRST Lego League team at Pine Street Elementary and a FIRST Tech Challenge team at Wayland Union Middle School.
