Wayland Union School personnel dedicated and cut the ribbon on the new administrative building at 893 East Superior St. The former University of Michigan West Health building was purchased and renovated using the $2.5 million bond money that was set aside for that purpose

“This truly allows us to create a true central office and put 19 people from six different locations under one roof.” said Superintendent Tim Reeves. “The old building, and the other six offices will be repurposed for the district.”

An open house tour of the new building will be held for the community from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10.

At the board meeting, members heard the results of an audit done by Plante Moran. CPAs Cory VanDyke and Madeline Coy explained that they found no problems with the books, or their systems. They were queried by the board, however, about the $1.5 million fund balance decrease.

VanDyke explained that the decrease was in line with the state average, and was due to funds earmarked for the Covid pandemic being phased out. It was pointed out that the new state budget formula provides $10,050 per student, which was a welcomed increase.

    In other business:

    • All of the school districts buses have passed safety inspection. All the bus routes now have drivers as well.
    • The school district received a $400,000 federal grant to be used for revamping the camera systems in the district.
    • A grant also was provided for new street crossing warning lights and speed detectors in and around the middle and high school campus. They are installed and operating with hopes to make it safer for the children.
    • The board meeting was opened with the pledge of allegiance led by students from Steeby Elementary. They were joined by Remi, a therapy dog, and the newest staff member at Steeby.
