Wayland students get closeup to professional musicians

Wayland Union Schools recently had the pleasure of two professional musician, a clarinetist and an opera singer, visit to explain their crafts to students.

Dorr Elementary first graders explored different forms of theatrical arts while reading about them in their latest Super-Duper Magazine. Mrs. Corie Auger Weber, wife of Dorr PE teacher, Michael Weber, dropped in to share and demonstrate the art of opera.

Mrs. Weber is an accomplished opera performer and has served as an adjunct instructor in music and voice at both Grand Valley State University and Western Michigan University. She also teaches at the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre.

A spokesperson said, “Students enjoyed this unique opportunity to experience opera first hand while making meaningful real-world connections to what they have been reading and learning in class.”

On Wednesday this week, world-renowned clarinetist Julian Bliss visited sixth–12th grade band students to share stories from his professional career, which included performing for the royal family, along with experiences touring the world.

He also offered helpful clarinet techniques and treated students to a live performance. His biggest piece of advice for young musicians was consistently practice the basics

“What an incredible opportunity for our students to learn from such a talented musician and see just how far a passion for music can take you,” a school spokesperson said.
