Jody Tyner

Wayland Middle School teacher and assistant varsity wrestling coach Jody Tyner suffered a stroke Saturday and is currently at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

A family spokesperson said, “At this time, he is still unconscious due to the stroke, he is not sedated. He is 100% dependent upon a ventilator and he is being tube fed (OG) through his mouth. They are keeping a close eye on his lungs as he did aspirate, but they are doing well at this time. His stroke was at the brain stem, which is the center for all of his motor activity, including heart, lungs, ocular movements, and digestion. It was also large enough of a bleed to occupy pieces of both hemispheres, so his entire body is affected, not just one side.”

His situation was updated today on Facebook: “Jody had a fever again, and another rise in blood pressure overnight. He has a cooling vest and they don’t believe it is related to an infection, but they are going to change antibiotics just in case. Otherwise there have been no changes.”

A family member said he responding to pain (more on the left than the right), he has a cough/gag reflex, and his pupils are responding to light, good signs.

“This is going to be a very long process for us.”

One of 3 of my kids favorite teachers. A truly great guy. Prayers for his family, and prayers that he recovers fully.
