
Lillian DeKoning Tuesday night became the ninth township clerk in Allegan County to resign since being elected to their posts last November.
The Wayland Township Clerk earlier this summer gave notice that she is stepping down after winning the general election last November, succeeding the retiring Ann McInerney.
The Township Board has decided to replace her at least temporarily with Bob Fryling. current chairman of the Township Planning Commission, who has some experience in the field. The moves means that the Planning Commission will have to find someone to fill Fryling’s vacant seat.
Township Trustee Matt Miner said, “I’m sorry to see Lillian go. I’mm sorry things didn’t work out.”
Word on the street was that Dekoning was resigning due to medical issues.
Township Supervisor Roger VanVolkingburg told colleagues that he interviewed six candidates for for sherrif’s deputies.
Micah Kutic is not resigning he is the Cemetery Supervisor. Jim Stein will take over as Cemetery Sexton. Lillian’s replacement.
Former Wayland City Clerk Michelle Herman will serve as an election assistant on a temporary basis.
Micah Kutic, is the cemetery supervisor but Township Trustee Jim Stein will take over as cemetery sexton. Kuhtic, who has been cemetery supervisor for 20 years, said he can work with Stein.
In other business at Tuesday night’s meeting, the Wayland Township Board:
- Decided to go ahead with the special assessments for Selkirk Lake weed control. No one from the public attended the scheduled hearing.
- Learned from Wayland Fire Chief Jon Timmer that the Gun Lake Tribe now has initiated its first fire department.
- Was told by Kuhtic he has the names of youths believed to be responsible for vandalism at Elmwood Cemetery.
- Learned that the board may have to call a special meeting before Sept. 30 with its auditor on the 2025-26 budget.
