Wayland High School junior Louie Harnish Saturday finished fourth in the singles qualifying block at the state bowling championship tournament at Waterford, thereby enabling him to survive the first round cut.
However, he was eliminated in the head-to-head competition in the next round by Jamesonn Vanier of Flint Kearsley.
As a result of the finish, Harnish has been named to the second unit of the Division 2 all-state bowling team.
Harnish rolled games of 226, 244, 192, 232, 196 and 223, to propel him into fourth place among the 56 bowlers competing. He was in first place after the second game. And was only two pins shy of third.
Harnish, in making the cut, averaged 205 in the first round of the stepladder finals, but unfortunately it was his final round. He needed just one more strike or spare per game.
“As far as I can see, that is Wayland men’s highest qualifying place,” said former WHS boys’ coach Sherry Miklusicak.
In 2009-2010, Taylor Andrews, qualified 10th (coach Renee Konecny at the time), and in 2008-2009 Paul Goodwin, qualified 17th. Louie’s six-game total of 1313 is the highest Wayland qualifying block, since the school’s history was recorded (data from MHSAA website).
Brooke Trumbull also represented Wayland in the state individual bowling finals and she averaged better than 160 in her six games, but missed the cut.
