WHS Legislative Debaters win awards at season’s end

The West Michigan Legislative Debate League wrapped up its season, bringing together 75 students from six area schools, including Wayland High School.

In this style of debate, students research real issues, write their own bills and debate them in mock congressional chambers, building skills in writing, public speaking and critical thinking.

Students can earn awards each month for outstanding speaking, leadership as presiding officers, and top novice honors. The season concludes with cumulative awards based on total points earned.

Wayland Union High School award winners included:

  • 1st place: G. Klug,
  • 4th place & Top Novice: G. Schmidtman,
  • 5th place: P. Ward,
  • 6th place: A. Rohde,
  • 7th place: E. Pogodzinski,
  • 8th place: A. Varney and
  • Top Presiding Officer: M. Oosterhouse.
