WHS senior wins Odyssey sponsored award

Patience Hawley

Wayland Union Schools’ Odyssey of the Mind teams took part recently in the state competition. During the event, Creativity Unlimited in Michigan, a sponsor of the Odyssey of the Mind program, awarded a $500 scholarship to Wayland Union High School senior Patience Hawley. A dedicated participant for eight years, Hawley plans to study geology at Grand Valley State University and she shared in her application essay that, “Odyssey shaped my life. Seeing everyone at Odyssey be unapologetically themselves gave me the bravery to be myself; Odyssey showed me who I am and who I will be for the rest of my life.”

Wayland teams also competing were the Dorr/Baker team coached by Deb Savides, which finished eighth; two Pine Street teams coached by Kayla and Dustin Simpson (fourth place) and Carlynn and Charlie Smallegan (eighth place); and the high school team coached by Rachel McGrady-Hawley, which earned seventh place.
