Wayland High School senior Evie Mathis, defending state champion and school record holder in the pole vault, has announced she’ll be vaulting for NCAA Division 1 University of Alabama Birmingham next year.
Mathis, who won the Division 2 state title with a vault of 11-9, has cleared as high as 12-6 during her career and she has been state runner-up a couple of times, besides winning top national accolades in the pole vault at the junior high level.
Mathis, the daughter of Rick and Cindy Mathis, was offered a full-ride scholarship from UAB. She will compete for the Wildcats this spring in her last prep season.
