
Maddie Bomhoffer, in her first-ever high school varsity race, finished 23rd among 224 competitors at the Early Bird Invitational cross country meet Friday at Portage.
She was among the top 10 percent of finishers and was awarded a T-shirt for being one of the top 25. She was the third freshman to finish overall with a time of 21:44 on the five-kilometer course.
Other Wayland competitors were sophomore Sophia Miller, 103rd, 26:10.56; freshman Elyana Jurkowski 112th and junior Marissa Ainsworth 120th.
In the boys’ contest, junior Mason Fein turned in a time of 17:59.52 to capture 37th place. senior Ethan Manning was 47th, freshman Carter Bultje 200th, junior Jackson Byers 221st, freshman Shayne Krasinski 269th,and freshman Kyan Lawrence 272nd.
There were 274 runners in all for the boys’ race.
