Wildcat sophomore breaks 20-minute barrier in 5K

The Wayland High School girls’ cross-country team placed seventh among 11 teams Saturday at the Cedar Springs Invitational.

But the big news of the day was that Wildcat sophomore Abree VanDenBrink individually broke the 20-minute barrier by recording a 5,000-meter time of 19:58.54. She finished 13th in the race.

The Wayland boys checked in eighth among nine teams with a score of 199. Perennial powerhouse Rockford won it with 50 points.

Hudsonville took first place in the girls’ competition with 42 points. Wayland finished with 184.

Backing VanDenBrink were freshman Madison Bumhoffer in 20th place at 20:44.6, senior Ryleigh Haveman 51st, junior Marissa Ainsworth 52nd, and sophomore Sophia Miller 54th.

For the boys, junior Mason Fein led the way in 15th place with a time of 17:11.52, senior Ethan Manning 19th in 17:21.5, freshman Carter Bultje 59th, junior Jackson Byers 62nd and freshman Shayne Krasinski 66th.
