Lady Wildcats double up Scots, await showdown

It was supposed to be a huge challenge for the Wayland girls’ basketball team Friday night when Caledonia came to town.

The Division 1 Fighting Scots brought with them a 5-2 overall record.

But the Wildcats nearly scored double the number of points Caledonia did in a somewhat surprising 55-26 verdict. It was Wayland’s seventh victory in as many outings this season.

The Wildcats have been famous for leaning heavily on inside player Addie Sikorski and guard Marissa Ainsworth. The Scots limited Sikorski to just five points and Ainsworth an even dozen. So it was obvious that Wayland teammates instead stepped up their offensive contributions.

Dacey Schafer tallied 10 points and Charity Laker eight, and both swished two three-point field goals. Laney Wolf chipped in seven points, including a three.

The victory sets up a big showdown Tuesday against South Christian, when two O-K Gold Conference powerhouses will clash at the Wildcats’ gym. South Christian was ranked No. 1 in the Division 2 Associated Press statewide poll The Sailors defeated O-K Gold rival Northview Friday night.
